Brian Shafer, MD
Dr. Brian Shafer is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist with specialization in cornea, glaucoma, complex anterior segment, and refractive surgery. He is the Founder and CEO of Shafer Vision Institute, a premier private practice in the Greater Philadelphia Area. The mission statement of SVI is to provide university- caliber care in an intimate private practice setting. The three divisions of SVI are surgical care, education, and research.
Dr. Shafer graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Rochester with a B.S. in Molecular Genetics. He took his love of science with him to Temple University School of Medicine where he attended medical school and graduated at the top of his class. While there, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society, reserved for the top 10% of medical students, as well as the Gold Humanism Honor Society, awarded to individuals who demonstrate exemplary humanistic qualities.
Following medical school, Dr. Shafer completed his Ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. Throughout residency, he found a passion for research and education. He was selected to be Chief Resident in his final year and also won the Medical Student Teaching Award. Dr. Shafer published multiple first author studies relating to various aspects of ophthalmology. He then completed his formal education with a fellowship at the highest-volume surgical fellowship in the country, Vance Thompson
Vision. While there, he completed thousands of anterior segment surgeries including cataracts, corneal transplants, glaucoma surgery, and revision surgeries. Additionally, he participated as a Sub-Investigator on over
20 trials and published numerous first author studies.
Dr. Shafer’s true passion is education, and he uses ophthalmology as the conduit by which he gets to share knowledge with anyone eager to learn.
